Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add buttermilk and vanilla.
Mix flour and soda and add to cream mixture. Chill overnight or several hours.
Roll 1/4 inch on floured surface; cut into rounds or 3 1/2 inch cookie cutter.
Bake at 400°F for 7-8 minutes on greased cookie sheet. May be topped with powdered sugar and cinnamon.
